Stanley is a village by the River Calder in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It is at the edge of the Wakefield conurbation, about two and a half miles north of the city centre.
Stanley is a sizable village, and neighbouring associated areas including Stanley Ferry, Lee Moor and nearby developments. To the east is Bottom Boat; separate by effectively part of Stanley.
The area has a number of commercial premises and corner-shops. It has a few pubs including The Wheatsheaf, Stanley Ferry and The Travellers.
About the village
The parish church, St Peter's, was a large and dominant building, built in 1822 at a cost of £12,000 and opened on 6 September 1824. It was demolished in 2014.[1]
A landscaped public garden was built (ongoing as of 2023) along with the resiting of the war memorial and a pit wheel commemorating the local miners.
Stanley Marsh is a nature reserve, with varied terrain including a lake. The reserve is on the site of a former colliery.
Hatfeild Hall, with its unorthodox orthography. Is a Grade II listed building.[2].[3] The Mulberry tree in the grounds of Hatfeild Hall is rumoured to be the one from which a cutting was taken and planted inside the exercise area of Wakefield Gaol, which gave rise to the rhyme "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush".[4]
