Split Island is an island in the outer part of King George Bay, a large bay on the coast of West Falkland, of the Falkland Islands. It is near the coast of West Falkland to its west.[1] To the east lie the Hummock Island Group, the closest of which is Rabbit Island. To the south are the Passage Islands and to the north-west is Westpoint Island. On West Falkland itself to the north-east rise the Byron Heights and Storm Mountain.
Fagan Gulch
The island is split in two by Fagan Gulch (51°28’17"S, 60°43’4"W), a narrow, deep gulch: this division gives the island its name. The gulch was named after Petty Officer Robert Fagan, who served as the cook aboard HMS Sheffield, and who died when struck by an Argentine missile on 4 May 1982, during the Falklands War. (The Sheffield was heavily damaged in the attack, and foundered while under tow on 10 May 1982.)[2]
