Spinningdale is a hamlet on the north shore of the Dornoch Firth in south-eastern Sutherland. It is found five miles north-east of Bonar Bridge.
'Dale' is from the Old Norse Dalr, meaning 'valley' but the origin of the name is otherwise unclear. It was referred to as Spanigidill in 1464, the pronunciation of which bears a close resemblance to modern Gaelic.[1]
The A949 road (which was part of the old A9 before the opening of the Dornoch Firth Bridge in 1991, passes through Spinningdale.
