Southgate Town hall is a municipal building in Green Lanes, Southgate, Middlesex.
History
The building was commissioned by the local board of health in the early 1890s. The building was designed by Arthur Rowland Barker in the Queen Anne style, and was completed in 1893.[1] It became the offices of the Southgate Urban District Council in 1894.
In 1914, the town hall was extended southwards, doubling its size, with a clock tower and large porch added to the main structure.[1] In continued to serve as the council headquarters (form 1933 as the 'Municipal Borough of Southgate'. It served as the Civil Defence Control Centre during the Second World War.
In 1965 Southgate's council was abolished and the building ceased to function as the local of seat of government. It was subsequently used as the Local History Archive until 2009 when it was deemed surplus to requirements and marketed for sale.[2] It was converted for residential use in 2015 and is now known as "Prytaneum Court" (Prytaneion is a Greek word meaning "seat of government").[3]
