River Wolf
The River Wolf is a minor river in the west of Devon, running of Dartmoor and becoming a tributary of the River Thrushel, which in turn joins the River Lyd.
The name of the river appears to be from that of the grey beast of the moors from which the river descends. An alternative suggestion is that it comes from a name in the old British language or even an earlier language, recorded by the Graeco-Roman map-maker Ptolemy as Ουολιβα (Uoliba)[1][2] as a town of the Dumnonii (possibly Broadbury Castle).
The river runs from Broadbury through the valley below Germansweek and empties into Roadford Lake, a man-made reservoir built in 1989. In July 2006 some 22 million gallons of water were released from the lake to help the survival of salmon in the river during a prolonged period of drought.[3]
After Roadford Lake the river continues through Slew Woods below the village of Broadwoodwidger. It then continues in a southerly direction eventually merging with the River Thrushel near Stowford and then joins the River Lyd at Tinhay near Lifton (which joins the River Tamar just east of Launceston).
