Old Lindley or Over Lindley[1] is a hamlet in the West Riding of Yorkshire, just beyond the suburbs of Huddersfield ,which loom to the south and east. It is near another hamlet, Jagger Green, the village of Holywell Green and the town of Elland. Old Lindley has a moor called Old Lindley Moor.[2]

History

The name "Lindley" means 'Flax wood/clearing', the 'Old' to distinguish from Lindley, now deep within Huddersfield’s townscape.[3]

Old Lindley is recorded in the Domesday Book as Linlei/Linleie,[4] Old Lindley was also known as "Linley(e)", "Lynley(e)", "Lynlay", Hold(e) "Lynlay", Old(e) "Lynlay", "Over Lynlay", "Linneley", "Lyndeley" and "Ouldlindley".[5]

Landmarks

Old Lindley Farm Cottage is a grade II listed house in Old Lindley, that is now split into 3 units.[6] There was a pottery in Old Lindley.[7]
