The Nelson Channel lies between Candlemas Island and Vindication Island in the South Sandwich Islands.
The channel was probably first sighted by Cook in 1775. It was charted by Discovery Investigations in 1930 and named 'Nelson Strait', not after the Hero of Trafalgar, but after Lieutenant Andrew Laidlaw Nelson of the Royal Naval Reserve (1904-58), who served successively as navigator, Chief Officer and Captain of Discovery II' between 1929 and 1935.
