Markham is a small village in the Sirhowy Valley of western Monmouthshire, lying to the north of Argoed. Built as a planned garden village, it grew out of the need to employ Markham Colliery.[1]
Amenities
At the heart of the village is an active congregational chapel; it is the only place of worship in the village and will soon be celebrating its centenary.
The village's primary school, Markham Primary School, is a feeder school for Pontllanfraith Comprehensive School and Blackwood Comprehensive School. Markham Primary was previously an all-ages school, where pupils started school at 5 years of age and continued until 15. Pupils took the old 11-plus exam for entry to grammar school or the entry exam for technical school at 12 or 13 years of age.
Markham RFC are the local rugby union team. Markham RFC have won the Cyrus Davies Cup three times. They have also been semi-finalists of the Worthington District's Cup three times.
