Johnstonebridge is a village in Dumfriesshire, in Annandale, roughly halfway between Moffat and Lockerbie. It sits uncomfortably close to the M74 motorway, which squeezes up Annandale: the Annandale Water Services on the motorway are in Johnstonebridge.
The village sits on the western bank of the River Annan, at a bridge over the river. Its main street is the B7074, which was the main road up the dale before the motorway.
Before the construction of the motorway there were services on the old A74 road there, one to serve each direction of the road. As with most of Annandale, the area is largely devoted to farming.
Johnstonebridge was named after the prominent local landowning family, the Johnstones, who caused a bridge to be built there over the Annan.[1]
The village of Newton Wamphray is nearby.
