Harlesthorpe is a village north-eastern Derbyshire, at the northern edge of Clowne. Though almost a part of Clowne, it retains a distinctness. It is separated from the town by the Harlesthorpe Dam, a large pond. The village is accessible, from the Rotherham Road, the A618.
Harlesthorpe Dam
Harlesthorpe Dam was, or so the story used to go, used to supply a head of water to a nearby mill. The mill was said to produce cloth for making sails. This cloth was known as Bump and the name Bump Mill Pond was widely used in the locality.
Today, Harlesthorpe Dam is a fishing centre, with has two bodies of water.[1] Both lakes offer a variety of species. The smaller of the two waters is a mature, two-acre lake surrounded by trees with, in the middle, a heavily weeded island.
