Green Island lies to the south-east of Cape Disappointment, the southernmost headland of South Georgia. It belongs to South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

The island was discovered by James Cook on 20 January 1775 and charted as 'Green Isle' or, with Bröde Island and First Rock, as one of 'the Green Islands' or 'Green Islets'. These isles are named from their greenish appearance.
