Information

Gort Weighouse, otherwise called 'The Crane' stands in Market Square, Gort, in County Galway. A weigh house once serving the market, it is a beautiful example of the type; a cut stone weigh house in the midst of the square (not isolated within car parking). It is believed to have been built in the 1760s.

The weighhouse was built probably around 1760, certainly in the middle to late 18th Century, under the auspices of Lord Gort, who oversaw the development of the town from a village to a major market town and a staging post on the coaching routes.

The Gort Weighhouse was donated to An Taisce by the town's development company, and An Taisce have restored it and transformed it into a tourist information centre.
