East Fleet is a hamlet in southern Dorset just east of the village of Fleet, itself little bigger, and southwest of Chickerell. East Fleet is a coastal place but on the Fleet, a lagoon separated from the open sea by Chesil Beach. The Fleet has given a name to the village and the village to its hamlet. The name "East Fleet" also refers to the part of the Fleet here, the West Fleet lying beyond a pinch-point just up the coast.
East Fleet sits about two miles west of Weymouth.
J Meade Falkner's smuggling novel, Moonfleet is set in Fleet. On 24 November 1824 strong winds and a storm surge caused waves to breach Chesil Beach, and many of the buildings in the village were destroyed. Moonfleet Manor is situated in the village of Fleet.
