Information |
Dalmarnock Bridge crosses the River Clyde by Dalmarnock, a suburb of Glasgow in Lanarkshire. It carries Dalmarnock Road, now the A749,
The current bridge is the fourth known to have spanned the Clyde at this point, and the first of steel. The predecessors were built of wood, and accordingly short-lived. A ford across the Clyde here was replaced by the first bridge in 1821: when it rotted this bridge was replaced by a second timber bridge in 1848. The second bridge lasted until 1887, when work began for a steel bridge, but in the interim a temporary third bridge was built to keep the crossing open. Finally in 1891 the current, steel bridge was completed.
The Bridge
The bridge crosses the river on five spans. It has steel girders resting on stone piers in the river. The piers extend up the sides of the decorative fascia panels and form part of the parapets, with lamp columns mounted atop them.
