Colton is a village in Lancashire, within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park. The village is in the Furness district about a mile north of the A590 between Newby Bridge and Ulverston.
The name of the village has been recorded as Coleton, which is Old English but uncertain of precise meaning, and its existence has been recorded as early as 1202.[1]
Colton stands on an incline at the top of which is the parish church, Holy Trinity. The church was built in 1575, and rebuilt 25 years later.[1]
Colton Beck runs beside the village; it is said that it was once known as the 'Cole'.
Countryside about the village
