Chapel Stile is a village in Westmorland, in Great Langdale, just above Elterwater village. It is about five miles north-west of Ambleside. The village has a school, a church, a general store and a local pub, the Wainwrights' Inn (formerly The Langdale Hotel). There is a quarry south of the village too.
An unusual local tradition is practised at weddings in the parish church – the couple are traditionally 'tied in' during the service. The local children tie up the church gates and the newlyweds are only released when coins (of small denomination) are thrown to said children.
Chapel Stile also gives access to the Langdale Pikes, Pike o' Stickle and Harrison Stickle. Other notable fells nearby include Pavey Ark, Bowfell and Pike o' Blisco.
