Carlton is a village the West Riding of Yorkshire, immediately south of Rothwell. It is about six miles south of Leeds city centre.
This parish is celebrated for its rhubarb growing, and is at the centre of the Rhubarb Triangle. Due to Carlton's rhubarb growing and farming heritage, the area has seen a recent influx of Eastern European migrants, who make a living working on the numerous farms.
Name
The name of Carlton is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Carlentone.[1] As with the several other Yorkshire villages of the same name, it is from the Old English Ceorla tun, (perhaps influences by the Old Norse karl) and means 'Estate owned by commoners'.
