Caerlaverock Parish Church and Graveyard, Bankend

Caerlaverock is a parish in south-western Dumfriesshire adjacent to the border with Kirkcudbrightshire. It is situated five miles south of the county town, Dumfries. It contains the villages of Sherrington, Bankhead, Glencaple Quay, and Blackshaws. Different opinions exist in regard to the derivation of the name of this parish, some interpreting the words of which it is composed, "the castle with the buttress jutting out", and others, "the castle close upon the sea", referring to the most prominent historical memorial in the place, the singularly formed and strong fortress called Caerlaverock Castle. It stands near the shores of the Solway Firth.

The parish includes:

  • Caerlaverock Castle, a 13th-century castle
  • Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve, a National Nature Reserve in the Solway Firth
  • WWT Caerlaverock, a Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust nature reserve
