Burtholme is a hamlet in the north-east of Cumberland. Its name is reflected in that of Burtholme Beck, a stream which marks a significant point on Hadrian's Wall. Hadrian's Wall runs through the parish.
The far wider Burtholme civil parish encompasses Burtholme itsklef and also such villages as Lanercost and Banks, all together with a population of just 200 souls at the 2011 census. The tables are turned though in ecclesiastical terms as Burtholme is within the Parish of Lanercost
The village is on the bank of the River Irthing, which has flowed down from the [[Kielder Forest] and the border of Northumberland. The land around the hamlet extends down to the river: the holme of the name refers to a piece of flat low-lying ground by a river or stream. The name is found as far back as a charter of 1169: the founding charter of Lanercost Priory made Burtholme Beck the western boundary of its land.
Burtholme Beck
Burtholme Beck is a small beck running through the parish of Burtholme feeding into the River Irthing. It is crossed by Hadrian's Wall and is close to the point, Turret 53B', at which the building material used for Hadrian's Wall changed from Limestone (to the east) to red sandstone (to the west).
