Burstwick is a village on Holderness, in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is to be found eightt miles east of Kingston upon Hull city centre, on the B1362 road.
History
Burstwick is described as a caput, or principal residence, in the Honour of Holderness,[1] and is listed in the Domesday Book as one of twelve linked manors.[2]
Burstwick is a few miles from the local market town, Hedon, and the villages of Keyingham and Thorngumbald.
According to the 2011 census, Burstwick parish had a population of 1,924.
Burstwick was served from 1854 to 1964 by Burstwick railway station on the Hull and Holderness Railway.[3]
Some low-lying parts of Burstwick were affected by the June 2007 floods which hit most of the county. Several properties were vacated while repair work took place.[4]
About the village
Burstwick's church is All Saints', which is a Grade I listed building.[5] There is also a Methodist church.
To the north-west of the village is the site of Burstwick Castle which is an ancient scheduled monument.[6]
Burstwick has a single pub, the Hare and Hounds, a village shop and post office, and a fish and chip shop, all on the main street. An 18-hole golf course is found a mile away.
