Billinge is a village in Lancashire, in the south of the county close to St Helens and Wigan and the conurbation gathered around them. At the census in 2001 it had a recorded population of 6,554.
Billinge is, by road, some 4½nbsp;miles southwest of Wigan town centre and 3½ miles northeast of St Helens town centre.
The parish church is St Aidan, part of the Diocese of Liverpool.
Name
The village's name appears to be Old English and etymologies such as may "(place at the) pointed hill" have been suggested. bil is a sword or edged weapon and might be a ridge, or be from the name of a local leader, thus billingas ("Billa's kin"). The earliest surviving record of the name though is as Bylnge in 1252.
