Beckwithshaw is a village in the West Riding of Yorkshire, about two and a half miles south-west of Harrogate.
The parish chuch, the Church of St Michael and All Angels, is a Victorian church.
History
Beckwithshaw takes its name from Beckwith, a hamlet a mile to the east, but while Beckwith has shrunk, its daughter village has grown to overtake it. The suffix "shaw", first recorded in 1323, is from the Old English sceaga, meaning a copse.[1]
In 1875, a reservoir was built to the west of the village. Known as Ten Acre Reservoir, it actually only covered eight acres.[2] In 2016, a report was commissioned into its future as the dam head was known to be failing. In 2019, it will be drained so that it only contains water enough to relieve pressure on the dam head and will also be converted into a wildlife area.[3]
Beckwithshaw was historically a hamlet in the ancient parish of Pannal.[4]
About the village
The village has a primary school, a pub (The Smiths Arms) and A post office was opened in the village in 1887 but closed in October 1978.[5]
Sports
Beckwithshaw Horse Trials, organised by British Eventing, is an annual cross country event held at Beaver Horse Shop on Windmill Farm.
