The Clydebridge Viaduct carries the railway line over the River Clyde by Rutherglen in Lanarkshire.
The bridge over was known initially as 'Hamilton Farm Viaduct' after the original farm nearby, but it became known as 'Clydebridge Viaduct' after the Clydebridge Steelworks on the west bank of the river: the steelworks were established in 1877 (steelmaking ceasing in 1978). The bridge was built as part of the Rutherglen and Coatbridge Railway, a line completed in 1865.
The bridge also incorporates a catwalk and water pipe on its south side, which were added during the period between the 1890s and 1930s when there were large industrial facilities on both sides of the river but no other crossing point for pedestrians; the closest being Cambuslang Bridge, over half a mile to the south of the viaduct.
