Thorpe Underwood is a village in the West Riding of Yorkshire, found ten miles north of York.
In 2011 the parish had a recorded population of 793.
History
The name "Thorpe" means 'Outlying farm/settlement'.[1] Thorpe Underwood is recorded in the Domesday Book as Tuadestorp.
Thorpe Green was recorded as being a hamlet in the township of Thorpe Underwood: it is where the modern Thorpe Underwood hamlet stands.[2] The parish has anciently borne an additions "s" to its name, as 'Thorpe Underwoods' It was formerly a township in the parish of Little Ouseburn.[3]
