Palmer Archipelago
(British Antarctic Territory)

Location
Location: 64°3’16"S, 61°36’48"W
Data

Auguste Island is a flat-topped island less than a mile long in the Palmer Archipelago off Graham Land in the British Antarctic Territory. It lies to the east of Liège Island and four miles north-east of Two Hummock Island in the Gerlache Strait.

This island was charted by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition on 23 January 1898, commanded Lieutenant Adrien de Gerlache, on which occasion a landing was made. Gerlache named the island ‘’Île Auguste’’ after his father, Colonel Théophile Adrien Auguste de Gerlache de Gomery (1832-1901), of the Belgian Army.

The island was photographed from the air by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition in December 1956.
