Name
Meysey Hampton is listed as Hantone in the Domesday Book of 1086, derived from the Old English ham tun meaning "home farm" or "homestead".[1] It was recorded in 1287 as Meseishampton, this alteration showing the influence of a local family called de Meisi.[1]
By 1868, the village was known as Meysey Hampton, with an alternative spelling of Maisey Hampton.[2]
Geography
Meysey Hampton lies in the southern part of the Cotswolds, a range of hills designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is very close to the border with Wiltshire, it is approximately thirty miles south-east of Gloucester and two miles west of Fairford.[2]
The nearest sizable towns are Cirencester to the north-west and Swindon to the south across in Wiltshire.
Villages nearby include Poulton, Ampney St Peter, Ampney St Mary, Down Ampney, Marston Meysey, Totterdown and Honeycombe Leaze.
Church
The parish church, St Mary the Virgin, was consecrated in 1269. It is thought to have been financed by the Knights Templar.[3][4] The chancel was enlarged in the 14th century.[3]
