Altass is a tiny village in Sutherland, perched half-way between the east and west coasts, on the north side of the Kyle of Sutherland, which marks the county's border with Ross-shire to the south.

The nearest places of substance are Lairg, seven miles over the hills to the north-east, and Bonar Bridge nine miles south-west lower down the Kyle.

Two and a half miles west of Altass, the water ceases to be tidal. The River Oykel, coming down from the mountains, becomes at that point the Kyle of Sutherland.
