HowdenHowden is a small market town in the East Riding of Yorkshire, about three miles north of Goole and seventeen miles south-east of York. William the Conqueror gave the town and a liberty around it to the Bishops of Durham in 1080, creating the wapentake of Howdenshire, which long remained in the control, ecclesiastical and secular, of the Bishops of Durham.
