Pabbay is an uninhabited island in the Sound of Harris, between North Uist and Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Like its neighbours, the island is part of Inverness-shire. Its name comes from the Old Norse Papey, which means "Island of the papar" (a word for monks).
The island was once very fertile, supporting a three-figure population and exporting corn, barley and illicit whisky. Most of the stewards of St Kilda were Pabbay men. In 1846 though, during the Highland Clearances, Pabbay was cleared for sheep and it remains uninhabited.
