Data |
Grassholm is an island a mile south of Frida Hole, along the south coast and near the west end of South Georgia. The name "Em Island" was given for this feature, probably by Discovery Investigations personnel who surveyed this coast in 1926 on behalf of the Interdepartmental Committee for the Dependencies of the Falkland Islands.
The South Georgia Survey, 1951–52, reported that the island was known to whalers and sealers as Grassholmen (Norwegian for "The Grass Island") and that the name "Em Island" was unknown locally. The form "Grassholm" has been approved omitting the Norse definitive suffix -en.
