A beanfield at Forthar in the Howe of Fife

The Howe of Fife is a broad area of flat land in Fife, in the midst of the county, to the northeast of the Lomond Hills and south of the Ochil Hills. Falkland is on its southern edge and Auchtermuchty its north, and between these towns opens up wide, level area watered by the River Eden and it many tributaries.

Once a waterlogged marsh, the Howe was drained in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to produce a fertile plain.
