Goodyhills is a hamlet in the parish of Holme St Cuthbert, in northern Cumberland, close by the coast of the Solway Firth a mile and a half east of the village of Mawbray, and 23 miles west of the City of Carlisle.
A quarter of a mile to the north-west is the parish seat of Holme St Cuthbert, where the local primary school and parish church are located,[1][2] and half a mile to the south-east is the small hamlet of Jericho.
At nearby Newtown, there is a farm park and tea room called the Gincase.[3]
Name
The name "Goodyhills" comes from Old English, and some local opinion would have it that it means "godlike (or sacred) hills"; which would be somewhat eccentric given the hamlet's position on the flatness of the Solway Plain close by the sea, with nowhere higher than 120 feet. It has been recorded spelled in several different ways in the past, including Guddyhills, Goddy-hills, Gowdyhowse, and Goodlike-hills.[4]
