New Bothwell Bridge in Lanarkshire carries the A725 road (emerging from the Raith Interchange) over the River Clyde from Bothwell on the north bank. The bridge is dull, concrete beam of the modern style, just upstream of the main town bridge, the pretty Bothwell Bridge, which was accordingly relieved of much of the traffic once straining it.
The new bridge was completed in 1983.[1]
The Battle of Bothwell Bridge in 1679, between the King’s forces and a Covenanter army, was fought up to the river bank between today's bridges.
