Stour is a common river name in southern England, of uncertain origin. The name may be from Old English, perhaps from styrian, "to stir or move", or as has been suggested form a word for "fierce one". A pre-English origin is also possible; O G S Crawford noted two tributaries of the River Po near Turin in Italy named Sture.[1][2]
