Clodock is a village and ancient parish in the west of Herefordshire, adjacent to the borders with Brecknockshire and Monmouthshire. The village lies on the River Monnow in the foothills of the Black Mountains. The ancient parish is divided into four chapelries: Craswall, Longtown, Llanveynoe and Newton. Each became a civil parish in 1866.[1]
Before 1536 Clodock was in the marcher lordship of Ewyas. Until 1852 the parish was part of the diocese of St David's.
The parish church is dedicated to St Clydawg (or Clydog), king of Ewyas, who was martyred in about AD 500. The present church dates from the 12th century, and is a Grade-I Listed Building.[2] It is completely un-Victorianised, with west gallery, box-pews, three-decker pulpit and seventeenth-century sanctuary furniture.
