Bigbury Bay is a broad bay on the south coast of Devon, between the Bolt Tail in the south-east and Revelstoke in the north-west, open to the English Channel. Two noted South Devon rivers enter the bay: the River Erme in the west and the Devon Avon to the east.
The shore of the bay is largely rocky, with a few beaches, the main beach being the broad sands at the mouth of the Avon.
The main point of interest in the bay is Burgh Island, opposite Bigbury-on-Sea, where the Avon enters the bay. The sands connect the island to the mainland at low tide; the flood tide leaving it cut off. On the island stands a hotel, made famous by Agatha Christie and several television adaptations of her work.
Bigbury-on-Sea has developed as a seaside resort. Bigbury itself is a smaller village inland of its bay.
The bay is mainly fringed with cliffs, but has scattered small sandy coves and where the Avon enters the bay at Bigbury-on-Sea, sheltered by the island, it lays down a broad, beach, much frequented by holidaymakers in season.
