Afonwen or Afon-wen is a tiny village in Flintshire, on the A541 Mold-Denbigh road and just under four miles from the A55 North Wales Expressway. It sits in a valley forming a pass through the hills formed by the River Wheeler, which flows at the foot of the village. The A541 makes use of the pass, as did a railway line, now dismantled.
The larger village of Caerwys is just to the north; at the 2001 Census, the population of the two villages together was 1,319.
South across the bridge over the Wheeler rise the steep slopes of Moel-y-Parc, a hill of the Clwydian Hills which reaches 1,306 feet. The Moel-y-Parc transmitting station, the tallest structure in the county, stands on its flank.
