Yelverton is a modest village in Norfolk, some 5 miles south-east of Norwich. It stands where the Norwich commuter belt gives way to the open fields of rural Norfolk.
The village itself lies just south of the A146, gathered along Church Road and close to the village of Alpington to the south and southeast. Yelverton has a duckpond, village hall, pub and St Mary's church.
St Mary's Church
St Mary's serves as the parish church of Yelverton and of Alpington. Built across the ages, it is a patchwork church, parts ill-matched on occasion but providing a delightful effect over all, showing the way it has been shaped organically by to comings and goings of history.
The chancel is tall, in a separate section from the modest nave. The tower at the west is brick-built and flint-faced, short and workmanlike. It was rebuilt in the late 17th century.
The church has a Norman font with traceried panels (possibly later than the font itself). A remnant of the rood screen survives; the screen's dado with twelve panels depicting angels, which hold a banner inscribed with a dedication to the donors, Thomas and Betreis Hotte.
The stained glass is modern, of the 19th and 20th centuries. The most recent addition is a pair of stained glass windows in the porch, installed in 2001. These use the themes of fire and water to complement the morning and evening light; that to the east depicts Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego with the angel in the fiery furnace. [1]
