Wycliffe is a tiny village on the south bank of the River Tees in the North Riding of Yorkshire. It is to be found downstream of Barnard Castle (which sits across the river in County Durham). The closest villages of any size are Ovington downstream to the east, and Whorlton, upstream on the Durham bank, which is also where the closest bridge is to be found.

Though a small place, it has a parish church, St Mary's, which also has a retreat centre associated with it, but placed away to the south-east in open countryside.[1]
