Wordsworth House is a Georgian townhouse in Cockermouth in Cumberland, in which William Wordsworth was born in 1770. Today it is in the ownership of the National Trust and preserved as a writer's house museum.
The house was built in the mid-18th century. A grand building tfor the town it stands behind a walled forecourt, its entrance Entrance with an 8-panelled door in 2 halves, and a portico supported by two doric columns on pedestals with moulded entablature.[1] The house is a Grade I listed building.[2]
Public opening
The National Trust opened the house to the public as a writer's house museum from March to October each year.
In November 2009, when west Cumberland was hit by flooding. Wordsworth House was one of many historic houses in the region to be affected by the floods: it was relatively lucky though as volunteers were able to move many of the historical artefacts to the dry floors of the house.[3]
