Winster Market House stands in the historic heart of the village of Winster in Derbyshire, high in the Derbyshire Dales area of the Peak District, and gives testimony to Winster's place as a thriving market town in former days.
The Market House dates back to the time when cheese and cattle fairs featured prominently in the daily life of the area. The hill farmers descending to the market in the dale, laden with the produce of their sturdy cattle.
Winster Market House dates from the end of the 17th or beginning of the 18th centuries. It has been in the ownership of the National Trust since 1906; it was the Trust's first acquisition in the Peak District.
