Main Island is the largest of the Willis Islands, which lie off the western tip of South Georgia. It is itself at the west side of this little group.
The island was discovered and charted by Captain James Cook on 16 January 1775, and named Willis's Island or Willis's Isle after Midshipman Thomas Willis of HMS Resolution, who first sighted it. The name was also extended to the whole group, hence the Willis Islands. The largest island renamed 'Main Island' on later charts, also appearing as 'Willis Main Island'.
