West Helmsdale is a small settlement on the west bank of the River Helmsdale, on the east coast of Sutherland. The village of Helmsdale lies opposite it, on the east bank of the river. The border with [[Caithness] is just up the coast
The settlement area of West Helmsdale strays from the river up into the hills, as does that of adjacent Gartymore. A number of small crofts are still maintained here, and many new ones are springing up from people who have visited Helmsdale and lost their hearts to it. Most crofts in West Helmsdale date back over a hundred years.[1]
Community Buyout
The Garbh Allt Community Initiative was established in West Helmsdale to buyout the 3,000-acre West Helmsdale Crofting Estate from Sutherland Estates. [1]
