The Water of Ae is a river in in Dumfriesshire. It is a tributary of the River Annan, which it joins just east of Lochmaben, and north of Lockerbie.
The Water of Ae rises at the Pot of Ae on the eastern slope of Queensberry, a very wet hill, for many burns run off its high slopes, and several of these join together in the Forest of Ae to create the swelling river.
The Ae flows out of the forest and through the village named Ae; the village was founded by the Forestry Commission in 1947 and is named after the river. The name is believed to be from the Old English Ea or the Old Norse equivalent, meaning simply "River".
Below the village, the river meanders towards Annandale to join the Annan.
