Walden is a dale and scattered hamlet that spreads within it, amongst the Yorkshire Dales, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The dale is a side dale of Wensleydale, sometimes known as Waldendale[1] or Walden Dale to distinguish it from the hamlet.
The hamlet stands two and a half miles south of West Burton at the mouth of the dale. A smaller hamlet, Walden Head, stands at the head of the dale, a mile south of Walden.
The name Walden, first recorded in 1270, comes from the Old English wala denu, possibly meaning "valley of the Welshmen".[2]
