Venniehill

Venniehill is a minor hill, one of a close group of tops known as the Boreland Hills in Kirkcudbrightshire. Its slope rises from the western bank of the tidal reach of the Water of Fleet, and is overspread with a beautiful wildflower meadow. The meadow overlooks Gatehouse of Fleet and is owned by the National Trust for Scotland.
During the summer months, the meadowland teams with butterflies and bumble bees.
The hilltop is partially surrounded by a low earthwork, which may be the defence structure of an old fort or of an early settlement.
Higher up on the Boreland hills is a more obvious hill fort (54°52’45"N, 4°12’4"W). Nearby too is Cardoness Castle.
