Troutbeck is a village in Westmorland three miles north of Windermere Village, and west of the A592 road. The whole village is a conservation area and includes a National Trust property; Townend.

Parish church

The Church of England parish church is Jesus Church, which was consecrated in 1562 with a west tower added in 1736 and restored in the Victorian period.

The church has some interesting fittings. It has Pre-Raphaelite stained glass by Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris and Ford Madox Brown dated to 1873, and one north window of about 1897 also in the pre-Raphaelite style.[1][2]

About the village

There is a village shop, which serves also as a post office and teashop, and a Village Institute meets above the Post Office.

The single pub in Troutbeck is The Mortal Man Inn (on main road through village). It has the "Oh, Mortal Man" verse once painted on the wall:

"O mortal man that lives by bread,
What is it makes thy nose so red?
Thou silly fool, that look'st so pale,
'Tis drinking Sally Birkett's ale."

The Queen's Head Hotel sits beside the A592, Kirkstone Pass Road.
