Somerset Bridge, Bermuda

Somerset Bridge

Somerset Bridge is a small bridge in Bermuda, connecting Somerset Island with the mainland. It is reputedly the smallest working drawbridge in the world.

The original Somerset Bridge, built in 1620, was cranked open by hand. The current bridge is more basic: two fixed cantilevers with a gap of just 32 inches between; the central 'drawbridge' section. A boat captain wishing to pass through must wait for a passer-by to open the bridge by removing the panel to let his mast pass through the gap. (Read more)
