Loch Ness Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Great Glen slicing through the middle of Inverness-shire. It lies amongst the Highlands, with dramatic mountain slopes rising from its banks alternating with green meadows. It is the longest and deepest freshwater loch in the British Isles, and the most capacious in Great Britain. The loch is a 23-mile ribbon of water, its foot just southwest of Inverness, fed by the River Oich in the south and drained by the River Ness in the north. Loch Ness is best known for alleged sightings of the mythical "Loch Ness Monster", said to lurk in the murky waters: the loch water has very low visibility due to a high peat content in the surrounding soil.
