Launceston Castle

Launceston Castle stands on a high motte in the midst of Launceston in Cornwall, overlooking the town. Once this was the centre of administration from which the Earls of Cornwall commanded their estates and the county.

The castle is a Norman motte and bailey castle raised by Robert, Count of Mortain, half-brother of William the Conqueror shortly after the Norman conquest, possibly as early as 1067. The primal Norman form remains as the castle was never brought up to date by later ages. (Read more)
